History of Use: The number and RFID signal on the tag is used to identify and track individual animals (cows) by assigning them a unique number which is linked information on their origins and movement throughout the animal’s life. Tag printed with unique and number: once sealed, the tag cannot be removed for re-use. The tag remains in place until after slaughter, when carcass is inspected and declared acceptable. Only then are tag & number retired.
Narrative: Taken from acquisition worksheet: Beginning January 1, 2001 all cattle in Canada have to be identified with an ear tag before they leave their herd of origin. The timing of this identification program has to do with stricter controls on monitoring cattle in direct response to BSE (Mad Cow) in the UK and Europe. Canada had its first reported case of BSE in 2003. This identification helps agencies like the Canada Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) trace the history of an infected animal to help ensure that no other infection reaches the human food chain. The Canadian Cattle Identification Agency manages the registry data for the national herd.

This tag was removed from the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency registry and has never been associated with a live animal.
