Description
Albumen Print attributed to Thomas Mitchell. Image shows an iceberg splitting in two due to sea water ice pressure. Northern ice pack, Cape Rawson, Canada, July 1876. The tip of the HMS Alert's masts can be seen peeking over the top of be berg on the far right. Several cracks in emulsion of negative can be seen in the print. Taken during the British Arctic Expedition of 1875-1876, led by Captain George Strong Nares. Page 29 of an album titled "Her Majesty's Ships the Alert & Discovery. 1875-1876. Vol. 2."
